A press conference in the heart of Toronto’s financial district brought together organizers from OTPP Divest, Canada Council, CFSON, and more, after Canada was chosen to host the Defence, Security and Resilience Bank (DSRB), what has been called a “war bank”.
With TD and BMO buildings looming behind them, speakers laid out what this bank represents, not security, but a redirection of public wealth into the military-industrial complex.
They warned that the DSRB will funnel public funds away from urgent social needs and the climate crisis, and into the hands of arms manufacturers and financial institutions already profiting from global instability.
Speakers called on elected officials to reject the bank, pointing to what they describe as an accelerating shift under the Carney government toward militarization, where “security” is increasingly defined through warfare, not human well-being.
At its core, they argued, the DSRB represents:
public money diverted from healthcare, housing, and climate action,
-Growing profits for weapons contractors and major banks,
-Deeper entanglement between finance and arms industries,
-And a push by Western powers to re-militarize society and dominate the Global South
Organizers warned that moves like this don’t lead to safety, they lock in a future shaped by war, inequality, and an escalating climate crisis.
