People will gather at Winnipeg’s city hall (west side) for the Annual Walk for Peace and Justice on Saturday, September 26, 2026 at 7 pm.
As participants weave their way through Old Market Square, Nuit Blanche patrons will be greeted with poetry, song and street theatre- all with a focus on peace.
The focus of this year’s walk is the consequences of Canada’s planned increase in military spending.
Walk organizers point out that the environment and Indigenous communities will pay the price for Canada’s increased investments in military.
“Our resources should build homes, schools, hospitals, clean energy and sustainable communities- not bombs and weapons systems,” said Candice Bodnaruk with Peace Alliance Winnipeg.
Kites are the visual theme of the walk this year- as organizers also bring attention to Israel’s ongoing targeting of Palestinian children and its recent decision (in August 2026) to ban children from flying kites in Gaza- defining them as weapons of war.
Bodnaruk said Article 31 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child was established by the UN General Assembly in 1989 and recognizes play, rest, and leisure as rights of children.
“Israel violated Article 31 by banning children from flying kites,” Bodnaruk said, adding that the majority of spaces in Gaza where children play have also been destroyed, including attacks specifically on playgrounds and schools.
The annual walk is organized by Peace Alliance Winnipeg. This year it has been endorsed by more than twenty organizations.
