SUMMARY:MayWorks Watch Party - The Invisible Doctrine
DESCRIPTION:Date: Tuesday\, May 20\, 2025\nTime: 7:00 to 10:00 pm\nVenue: On Zoom\nAdmission: Free. You must register in advance to receive a link to the Zoom meeting. Register at https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/dmG4rAu0RhCq2toaXfAldw#/registration. \nThe Invisible Doctrine explores the dominant ideologies\, political economy\, corporate power\, globalization\, labour history\, economic inequality\, consumerism\, environmental issues\, the climate crisis\, public relations and propaganda\, social alienation\, and the rise of authoritarianism and fascism. The film has a depressing topic but an inspiring conclusion\, describing a truly participatory democratic political system to repair the damage neoliberalism has done – a system that appeals to us as active citizens rather than consumers and our shared social\, political\, and environmental commons. \nAfter the film there will be a discussion about the film and systems change as it applies to political and economic systems. \nSponsors: Peace Alliance Winnipeg\, Ethnorama and Marianne Cerilli – Change Agent

SUMMARY:Lanterns for Peace 2025
DESCRIPTION:Date: Wednesday\, Aug 6\, 2025\nTime: 7:30 pm\nPlace: Memorial Park\, Winnipeg (by the fountain) \nEighty years ago\, the world was introduced to the horrors of nuclear war. The death\, destruction and suffering that resulted from the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki\, on Aug 6 and 9\, 1945 meant that the world had changed for the worse. Nothing would ever be the same. The mushroom clouds that arose over Japan cast a shadow that menaces every living creature\, even today. \nIn 1945 the United States had a monopoly on nuclear power; today\, nine countries have their own nuclear arsenals and many more\, via NATO\, are set up to use these weapons. Even more alarming is the present conflict in Ukraine which pits a nuclear armed Russia against a nuclear-armed NATO. \nTherefore\, we gather annually to remember people whose lives were lost in August 1945\, to remember the survivors whose lives were unalterably damaged\, and to reaffirm our commitment to the abolition all nuclear weapons. \nPlease join us for our annual Lanterns for Peace ceremony. Beginning at 7:30 pm we paint lanterns and make origami cranes. (We provide the art supplies; you contribute your imagination and creativity.) At 9:15 pm\, following a short program of speeches\, we float our lanterns in the fountain as the sun sets. (Note: If you wish to be seated during the speeches\, please bring a lawn chair.) \nIt is a beautiful ceremony\, rich with meaning and one which can be enjoyed by the whole family. If you have never been to one\, here is a playlist of videos of Lantern Ceremonies over the years. \nProgram\n7:30 – 8:30 PM\nMaking Lanterns \n8:30 – 9:30 PM \nWelcoming Remarks\nCandice Bodnaruk\nJunko Bailey \nGreetings\nDavid Pankratz\, on behalf of Premier Wab Kinew \nKeynote Addresses by\nOwen Schalk\nKristine-Claire Bolisay\nSarah Rohleder \nMayor of Hiroshima Peace Declaration\nRachel Reesor-Taylor \nReading from Black Rain\nCandice Bodnaruk \nThe Story of Sadako\nMomo Phillips \nConcluding Remarks\nJunko Bailey \nLaunch of Lanterns \nSponsors\nPeace Alliance Winnipeg\, Japanese Cultural Association of Manitoba\, Winnipeg Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers)\, Mennonite Central Committee \n

SUMMARY:Rally - Hands off Venezuela!
DESCRIPTION:The United States has been meddling in Venezuelan affairs since the election of Hugo Chávez in 1999. Despite American backed coup attempts\, assassination plots\, and economic sanctions\, the people of Venezuela have stood firm and continued to elect Chávez\, and following his death in 2013\, Nicolás Maduro. \nMore recently\, under the false pretext of combatting drug smugglers\, the US military has been murdering unarmed fishers (more than 70 to date) and amassing a naval fleet off the coast of Venezuela. An invasion could come at any moment. \nInternational solidarity in opposition to America’s plans for Venezuela is building. In coordination with the Canada Wide Peace and Justice Network call for a week of emergency protests November 15–23\, we are holding an information picket. \nSunday\, November 23\, 2025\n1:00 PM\nRiver and Osborne\nWinnipeg \nPlease join us. \nSponsors: Peace Alliance Winnipeg\, Manitoba-Cuba Solidarity Committee\, United in Action\, Communist Party of Canada – Manitoba\, and Araucaria.

SUMMARY:Justice for Hassan Diab
DESCRIPTION:Join us Friday\, March 20 for Justice for Professor Hassan Diab\, a webinar and information evening\, hosted by Peace Alliance Winnipeg and other social justice organizations. Guests are welcome to join us online or in-person. \n\nHear from Professor Diab himself as well as his lawyer Donald Bayne about how this case is an especially egregious example of the failures of the Canadian justice system and our biased extradition laws. The injustice began in 2008 when the then University of Ottawa Professor was arrested by the RCMP for a 1980 Paris synagogue bombing. He has always maintained his innocence. Canada then extradited Professor Diab to France in 2011\, where he would spend more than three years in prison\, most of it in solitary confinement\, despite never being charged with a crime. Today Diab has is still being relentlessly pursued by the French legal system. Although in 2018 he was finally permitted to return home to Canada\, as recently as April 2023 Professor Diab was convicted in absentia in France after an unfair trial. \n\nThis case is an especially egregious example of the failures of the Canadian justice system and our biased extradition laws. Join us for this important meeting to hear from social justice groups on the case and find out how you can become involved to support Professor Diab. \n\nThe event is free but donations are welcome. \nUkrainian Labour Temple \n591 Pritchard Avenue \n7:00 PM \nMarch 20\, 2026 \nRegister for zoom webinar. SUMMARY:Book Launch: Canada & NATO: Myth of a Global Peacekeeper
DESCRIPTION:Join author Owen Schalk at the launch of his new book\, Canada & NATO: Myth of a Global Peacekeeper. His book disrupts the popular perception of NATO in the West—that it is a defensive\, collective security organization—and explains that this is a myth. The book aims to prove five central points: 1) NATO has always been an offensive alliance\, 2) the wars it wages are not just\, 3) its existence and expansion stirs global tensions and raises the risk of global war\, 4) it undermines Canadian sovereignty\, and 5) it diverts resources that can serve the social needs of Canadians into a largely US-owned arms industry. Schalk thus makes a compelling argument that Canadians should oppose NATO and support their government’s withdrawal from the alliance. \nDate: Friday\, April 10\, 2026\nTime: 7:00 pm\nPlace: McNally Robinson Booksellers\, Grant Park Shopping Mall\, 1120 Grant Avenue\, Winnipeg \nMore information and pre-order the book: https://www.mcnallyrobinson.com/9781997544074/owen-schalk/canada-and-nato-myth-of-a-global-peacekeeper. \nYouTube Livestream Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLMfVuzIHso
