DESCRIPTION:Date: September 26\, 2026\nTime: 7:00 PM\nPlace: Assemble at the west side of City Hall\, 510 Main Street \nJoin us on our annual Walk for Peace and Justice through Winnipeg’s Exchange District during Nuit Blanche\, Winnipeg’s celebration of contemporary art. Organized by Peace Alliance Winnipeg along with various social justice organizations\, the Walk for Peace and Justice will shine a light on the horrors of war and the urgent need to work for peace. We will deliver our message to Nuit Blanche visitors through music\, poetry and visual art. Our focus will be on Canada’s increased military spending and the growing dangers of world war.  Palestine will also be an important theme for the walk\, specifically Israel’s ongoing targeting of Palestinian children. The Israeli government recently banned Palestinian children from flying kites in Gaza and the kite will be our primary peace symbol for the walk.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Helyeh Doutaghi’s Still\, Minab - “This is Not a Military Zone”
DESCRIPTION:STILL\, MINAB episode 8\, “This is Not a Military Zone”: screening and discussion with Helyeh Doutaghi. \nDate and Time: Saturday\, October 24\, 2026 at 12:00 pm \nPlace: WestEnd Commons\, 641 St Matthews Ave\, Winnipeg \nAdmission: Free / by donation\, with light refreshments provided \nPlease join us for a screening of episode 8\, “This is Not a Military Zone\,” (27 min)\, followed by a discussion with Helyeh Doutaghi on her 8-part series Still\, Minab\, about the children and families directly impacted by\, and accountability for\, the US bombing of Shajareh Tayyebeh Elementary School in Minab\, Iran on Feb 28\, 2026.  \nSeries creator\, and Lecturer of International Law at University of Tehran\, Helyeh Doutaghi will be joining us live on zoom from Tehran.\n \nAll proceeds will go to the Sameer Project\, supporting families in Gaza.  \n  \nBackground:\nOn February 28\, 2026\, at 11:23 AM\, the United States and the Zionist entity struck Shajareye Tayebe School in Minab\, Iran. The school was hit three times. One hundred and fifty-five lives were lost—students between the ages of six and twelve\, teachers\, parents waiting to take their children home\, and school staff. Nothing can ever fully account for the lives taken that day. But accountability begins with truth—and with honoring the agency and narratives of those subjected to colonial and imperial aggression. \nStill\, Minab is a mini‑series born from a responsibility to affirm the victims’ own voices: their lives\, testimonies\, and interpretations as undeniable sources of knowledge about this atrocity. It is also a commitment to them. \nStill\, Minab honors the people of the south—holding its pain and dignity together—as a testament to the best of humanity. \nStill\, Minab is a fieldwork ethnography of the Minab massacre and its aftermath\, researched\, written\, and narrated by Dr. Helyeh Doutaghi. \nHelyeh Doutaghi is scholar of international law and geopolitical economy. Her research explores the intersections of the Third World Approaches to International Law (TWAIL)\, encompassing Marxian and postcolonial critiques of law\, sanctions\, and international political economy. \nShe has contributed to a variety of scholarly and popular journals\, such as the Leiden Journal of International Law\, Middle East Critique\, Articles of War\, Geopolitical Economy Report\, The Conversation\, The Hill Times\, and Rabble.ca\, among others. \nShe is currently lecturer at the University of Tehran\, completing her manuscript on Iranian sanctions regime and neoliberalism.
