SUMMARY:Information Picket: No War With Russia
DESCRIPTION:No War With Russia\nPeace Alliance Winnipeg is joining with organizations across Canada to demand that our government work for peace with Russia. Help us distribute literature urging our neighbours to speak out for peace. \nDate: Saturday\, Jan. 29\, 2021\nPlace: River Avenue and Osborne Street\, Winnipeg\nTime: 12:00 Noon to 1:00 pm \nBackground\nThe world is on the brink of a war in Ukraine that could quickly become a world war that would kill millions and end civilization. This dangerous situation did not develop overnight. Rather\, it is the predictable outcome of attempts led by the United States to encircle and dominate Russia after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.  Successive Canadian governments have helped create this dangerous situation and it is time for Canadians to tell our government to work for peace. \nCanada can lead by example by refusing to arm Ukraine’s government and withdrawing our troops from Ukraine and other eastern European states. Canada should be working diplomatically to help ease tensions within Ukraine and between Russia and NATO. More generally\, our government should work for nuclear disarmament and sign the United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. \nResources\nThe current situation in eastern Europe is too complex to describe in an email. Here are some helpful sources of information. \n\nNational call to Trudeau government to de-escalate conflict between Russia and NATO over Ukraine \nUN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons\nCanadian Foreign Policy Institute\nWorld Beyond War\nInterview with Glenn Michalchuk\, Tamara Lorincz and Ken Stone\nChris Cook of Gorilla Radio interviews Glenn (Peace Alliance Winnipeg)\, Tamara (Canadian Foreign Policy Institute) and Ken (Hamilton Coalition to Stop the War) on the crisis in eastern Europe and why it is necessary to make our government work for peaceful solutions. SUMMARY:No New Fighter Jets Information Picket
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, January 15\, 2022\nTime: 12:00 Noon\nPlace: River Avenue and Osborne Street \nHelp us get the word out! \nThe Canadian government is planning to purchase 88 new warplanes\, for a sticker price of $19 billion and a total cost\nof at least $77 billion. \nThis new generation of bomber jets will be designed to do the same thing the last batch did – carry bombs and missiles that kill civilians (disproportionately children)\, destroy critical infrastructure that leaves millions without safe drinking water or electricity\, and to run environmentally costly training drills. This time they’ll have the capacity to carry nuclear weapons. \nCanada’s current stock of fighter jets have spent the past few decades bombing Afghanistan\, Libya\, Iraq and Syria\, prolonging violent conflict and contributing to massive humanitarian and refugee crises. These operations had a deadly toll on human life and have nothing to do with ensuring security for Canada. \nEven former Deputy Minister of Defence Charles Nixon stated that Canada does not face any credible threats and “new Canadian fighters are not required to protect Canada’s populace or sovereignty.” \nThe clock is ticking. The procurement competition officially started July 2020\, and we don’t have much time before the winning contract will be selected in early 2022. \nImagine how much better off we would all be if\, instead of investing in death\, Canada spent this $88 billion on such things as clean drinking water in First Nations communities\, responding to the climate crisis and helping Canadian workers transition to a post carbon future. \nWe need to stand up and be heard\, without delay.

SUMMARY:Canada and Haiti: A Peace Alliance Winnipeg Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, November 13\, 2021\nTime: 12:00 Noon Central Time\nPlace: Online.\nRegister: Go to Eventbrite by clicking here. \nIn 2004\, Canada collaborated with the U.S. and France to overthrow Haiti’s elected president\, Jean Bertrand Aristide\, who enjoyed widespread support among the poorest Haitians. Since then\, with Canada’s support\, a series of right-wing governments have overturned Aristide’s reforms and violently repressed his supporters. \nReleased in 2019\, Elaine Brière’s documentary\, Haiti Betrayed\, exposes the role Canada played in the 2004 coup. Beginning November 6th\, webinar registrants can watch the film on Vimeo for free. Get the link and viewer code when you register for the webinar. \nThe webinar will be a venue for viewers to ask the director\, Elaine Brière\, questions about making the film and to ask Haitian activist Jennie Laure-Sully questions about the current situation in Haiti. \n  \nBiographies \n  \nElaine Brière is a Canadian filmmaker and photojournalist. Her first documentary\, Bitter Paradise: The Sell-out of East Timor\, won Best Political Documentary at the l997 HOT DOCS! festival and Production Excellence award at Seattle Women in Film in l998. Bitter Paradise aired on TVO\, CBC Radio-Canada\, CFCF-12 Montreal\, BC Knowledge Network\, SCN\, WTN\, PBS and Swedish National Television. \nThe Story of Canadian Merchant Seamen\, released in 2006\, aired on SCN and Knowledge Network and toured extensively in New Zealand\, the UK and Australia. \nElaine’s photographs have been collected by the visual arts section of the National Archives of Canada. Her work has appeared in The Globe & Mail\, the New York Review\, Canadian Geographic\, Carte-Blanche\, and the Family of Women. East Timor\, Testimony\, was published in 2004. She is the founder of the East Timor Alert Network and received the Order of Timor-Leste in 2016 for her contribution towards the liberation of East Timor from Indonesian occupation. \nHer current feature documentary\, Haiti Betrayed\, on the role of Canada in the 2004 coup d’état in Haiti\, was released in late 2019. It was translated into French in the summer of 2020 and aired on TV5 in Québec and France. \nJennie-Laure Sully is a researcher at the Socioeconomic Research Institute (IRIS) and a community organizer at CLES\, a center for sexually exploited women. She studied anthropology and public health and has a master’s degree in biomedical sciences from the University of Montreal. She has worked as a research coordinator in hospitals and as a psychosocial caseworker in rape crisis centers. She is very active in the women’s movement and in the movement for the human rights of migrants. She was born in Haiti and moved to Quèbec with her family when she was 2 years old. Among the many causes she cares about\, the fight against imperialism and for the sovereignty of Haiti is among her top priorities.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Canada's Cold War
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, Oct. 9\, 2021\nTime: 12 Noon CDT\nAdmission: Free. Register at Eventbrite. \nRichard Sanders\, founder of the Coalition to Oppose the Arms Trade\, explains why the Canadian government needs to stop financing ethno-nationalist East European lobby groups that still exalt the memory of their Nazi-collaborating founders\, leaders\, activists and war heroes. Sanders discusses the history of Ottawa’s support for these groups and argues that taxpayers must call the government to account for continuing to fund organizations that whitewash their communities’ historic complicity in the Holocaust and other crimes against humanity. Nor should Canadians be funding monuments\, publications\, events and meeting centres used by these groups to memorialize their fascist forebears as if they were noble “freedom fighters.” \nThis talk is based on this research by Richard Sanders: “Defunding the Myths and Cults of Cold War Canada.” \nPlease sign his online petition to “Stop Canadian government funding of groups that glorify Nazi collaborators.” \nBio \nRichard Sanders has engaged full-time in the antiwar movement since 1984 when he escaped academia with an MA in cultural anthropology. In 1989\, in an effort to expose Canadian complicity in warmongering\, he founded the Coalition to Oppose the Arms Trade (COAT) and its magazine\, Press for Conversion! Over the decades\, COAT organized many public campaigns including peace rallies\, marches\, vigils and conferences. The magazine\, while initially focusing on the conversion of military industries\, has broadened since 1999 to include other themes that challenge the official national mythology that Canada is a global force for peace\, human rights and democracy.

SUMMARY:Webinar - Partners in Crime: the US-Canada Hybrid War Against Venezuela
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, Sept. 11\, 2021 \nTime: 12:00 Noon CDT \nPlace: Online. Register at Eventbrite. \nAdmission: Free \nThe United States and its allies\, Canada and the EU\, have carried out a 20 year assault on the legitimate government of Venezuela. Because China and Russia have promised to defend Venezuela from a US military invasion\, the US has conducted a hybrid war against the country. The Obama decree that designated Venezuela an “unusual and extraordinary threat to the security of the USA” allowed Obama\, followed by Trump and then Biden to by-pass regulations of war and any Congress oversight to try to overthrow the legitimate government of Nicolas Maduro with a series of economic measures and covert operations. In this webinar\, Mariá Páez Victor details this hybrid war and the implications it has had for Venezuela\, for the US and its allies and for the region. \nMariá Páez Victor\, PhD is a sociologist\, born in Venezuela\, now retired from university teaching who is dedicated to writing. As well\,  she is a frequent commentator on issues related to Latin American history and politics and she has participated in numerous events on TV\, radio and in public meetings. In addition she  has her own weekly radio program about Venezuela in the Spanish language community radio of Toronto. \nMariá’s Recommended reading: \n\nOrinoco Tribune\nBook by Justin Podur and Joe Emersberger: “Extraordinary Threat \, the US Empire\, the Media and 20 Years of Coup Attempts in Venezuela” Published by Monthly Review\nWebinar by Yves Engler\, “Canada in Venezuela“

SUMMARY:Winnipeg Lanterns for Peace 2021
DESCRIPTION:76 years ago\, the world was introduced to the horrors of nuclear war. The death\, destruction and suffering that resulted from the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki\, on Aug 6 and 9\, 1945 meant that the world had changed for the worse. Nothing would ever be the same. The mushroom clouds that arose over Japan cast a shadow that menaces every living creature\, even today. \nIn 1945 the United States had a monopoly on nuclear power; today\, nine countries have their own nuclear arsenals and many more\, via NATO\, are set up to use these weapons. \nTherefore\, we gather annually to remember people whose lives were lost in August 1945\, to remember the survivors whose lives were unalterably damaged\, and to reaffirm our commitment to the abolition all nuclear weapons. \nPlease join us for our annual Lanterns for Peace ceremony. Beginning at 7:30 pm we paint lanterns and make origami cranes. (We provide the art supplies; you contribute your imagination and creativity.) At 9: 15 pm\, following a short program of speeches\, we float our lanterns in the fountain as the sun sets. \nIt is a beautiful ceremony\, rich with meaning and one which can be enjoyed by the whole family. If you have never been to one\, here is a playlist of videos of Lantern Ceremonies over the years. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLjun-krHoPPL4Q1IW7dGVU462XV81fj23 \nDate: Friday\, Aug 6\, 2021\nTime: 7:30 pm\nPlace: the south side of the Manitoba Legislative Building \nPublic health directives will be followed. Masks will be available for those who need one\, but you may prefer to bring your own. \nSponsors: Peace Alliance Winnipeg\, Japanese Cultural Association of Manitoba\, Council of Canadians (Winnipeg Chapter)

SUMMARY:37th Annual Winnipeg Walk for Peace
DESCRIPTION:  \nPlease join us for the 37th Annual Winnipeg Walk for Peace. We assemble at noon on the west side of the Legislative Building. The walk begins at 12:30 pm. \nHere is the route. Help us promote the Walk.\n \n\nShare the event with your friends on Facebook.\nDownload\, print and display this poster.\nEmail the poster in jpeg format or repost it on your own web site.\n\nWatch this space for more details. \nSponsors: Peace Alliance Winnipeg and Council of Canadians Winnipeg \nBackground: Winnipeggers have held an annual Walk for Peace since 1981. The purpose then was to draw attention to threat of nuclear war and to urge our political leaders to pursue peaceful options and to support nuclear disarmament. In many ways the world situation is more dangerous than it was in 1981 and our need to remind our politicians of their responsibilities remains. \nCanadians overwhelmingly support peace and disarmament. Polling conducted by Environics in 2008 indicated that almost 90 percent of Canadians support the abolition of nuclear weapons. Research reported by Environics in 2018 shows that Canadian opposition to nuclear weapons remains high. Despite this\, the federal government has refused to support the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons\, approved by 122 countries at the United Nations on July 7\, 2017. \nEqually disturbing has been Canada’s increasingly belligerent relationship with Russia\, participation in Middle Eastern wars\, and sales of arms to notorious human rights violators\, such as Saudi Arabia. \nFor these and many other reasons\, the Walk for Peace remains relevant and we hope you can help make it a success. \n

SUMMARY:My Jerusalem: Responding to the U.S. Embassy Announcement
DESCRIPTION:The United Nations partition plan of 1947\, which drew the boundaries for the two States of Palestine and Israel\, recognized the international nature of the City of Jerusalem\, and called for it to be administered by the United Nations Trusteeship Council. For the next 70 years the international community recognized and supported the unique nature of Jerusalem. All of that changed on December 6th\, 2017\, when the U.S.A. announced that it would move its Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. \nJerusalem holds significant religious and spiritual importance to the three Abrahamic religions\, Judaism\, Christianity and Islam. Please join us on Wednesday February 28th\, 7:00 P.M. in Eckhardt-Gramatte Hall\, University of Winnipeg\, to hear from followers of these three religious traditions. \nThe panelists are: \nRabbi David Mivasair – is motivated by the Biblical command to “seek peace and pursue it” and lived in Jerusalem for four years. \nFadi Ennab – is a lecturer and educator on migration and anti-oppression and is a Palestinian-Canadian from an Arab-Christian background born and raised in the Middle East. \nDr. Idris Elbakri – was born in the city of Jerusalem and spent his formative years there\, he has lived in Winnipeg for nearly 13 years and been active in a number of community initiatives including grassroots efforts to welcome Syrian refugees. \nThe panelists will share their personal reflections on what Jerusalem means to them and their religious tradition. The event is free and open to all. \nThe event is sponsored by: Canadian Arab Association of Manitoba\, Global College – University of Winnipeg\, Independent Jewish Voices – Winnipeg\, Mennonite Central Committee – Manitoba\, Peace Alliance Winnipeg\, United Church Conference of Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario\, United Jewish Peoples Order – Winnipeg\, and United Network for Justice & Peace in Palestine & Israel.

SUMMARY:North Korea & the Danger of Nuclear War (Evening Event)
DESCRIPTION: \n\n\nLecture by Michel Chossudovsky; hosted by Peace Alliance Winnipeg\, Menno Simons College\, and the Geopolitical Economy Research Group \nBackground \nWe are at a dangerous crossroads. Miscalculation could lead to the unthinkable. He is the author of eleven books. His writings have been published in more than twenty languages. \nFREE ADMISSION. Donations gratefully accepted.
