World War One: 100 Years Later

Spread the love

August 4, 2014 was the hundredth anniversary of Canada’s entry into World War One. Was this war a struggle for democracy or an inter-imperialist feud that got out of control? Was it the crucible in which Canadian nationhood was forged (a theory popular with Canadian Conservatives) or have Harper’s Tories decided to use the war to rebrand Canada in their own militaristic image?

Professor Henry Heller, of the History Department at the University of Manitoba, and Amber Berg, of the Winnipeg New Socialist Group, discussed these and many other questions with an audience at Winnipeg’s Millennium Library on July 30, 2014.
