Troops may stay in Afghanistan after 2011: MacKay

by CBC News, Oct. 8, 2009

The Conservative government will let Parliament decide what Canada’s future role in Afghanistan will be beyond 2011, two cabinet ministers say.

The country’s troops may stay in Afghanistan in a non-combat role, Defence Minister Peter MacKay told the House of Commons defence committee in Ottawa on Thursday.

It is the third time in recent weeks that MacKay has raised the issue. Prime Minister Stephen Harper has said Canada will pull its troops out of Afghanistan by 2011.

Even if that is the case, it is widely expected in military and diplomatic circles that hundreds — and perhaps as many as 1,000 Canadian military personnel — will stay in what’s vaguely termed “non-combat” roles.

    Dear Mr. Lauzon:
it is your government that is “leaking” this information…..I have worked as a photo journalist and understand that these issues are put out to gauge the publics reaction. This isn’t the statements of some left leaning reporters or bloggers these statements are coming from Mr KacKay. There is no such thing as a non combat role in Afghanistan…the Tailban learn our routes….then kill or troops with roadside bombs
I deeply appreciate you replying to my email….but it seems to be your government that is confused..
    thank you

    Dear Doug,

Thank you for your email and the concerns you express for our troops. The information you received was incorrect. The Prime Minister has been very clear, the troops will not serve beyond February 2011. He has stated this in the House of Commons and in public. This is not negotiable. It will take the approval of Parliament to extend the mission beyond February 2011 and our government has no intention of asking for this extension.

    Best regards,

    Guy Lauzon

    Dear Mr Lauzon

There is a suggestion that the Prime Minister is thinking of keeping our brave troops in Afghanistan past the pull out date
Please….even the Americans are having second thoughts about staying in a country where they admit the government
just pulled off a suspect election( One in three votes cast for President Karzai in Afghanistan’s presidential elections were faked, with the official body overseeing the ballot condoning the massive fraud, EU election observers said today)
    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/Afghanistan/article6836616.ece
. and almost every analyst agree its a lost cause and Karzai is corrupt
After all these years…and over a hundred Canadian lives….the country is in worse shape.
We don’t need another Vietnam…even President Oboma is trying to figure out how to escape this mess.
“At the very moment when our troops and our allies’ troops are sacrificing more and more, our path and our progress seem to be growing less and less clear,” Kerry said at a hearing of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Kerry, a Massachusetts Democrat and Vietnam veteran who heads the panel, said he is concerned about the utility of adding more forces to the war.
In his Aug. 30 classified assessment, McChrystal said that if he doesn’t get more troops within the next year, the war in Afghanistan will “likely result in failure.”Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the top general in Afghanistan, revealed Sunday that he has spoken to the president only once since he took command in May.
Please don’t support any Canadian Troop extension….for any reason.

    thank you
